Thought Id share these with you all. I was out on one of the sites I did all the cabinetry for on Wednesday, and finally remember to take some pics of all the work I did there. This was all done back in Feb 07. All of the timber is Satin Sycamore, except the slats on the bed, being hoop pine. I actually made 3 beds, but the other two are completely setup so couldnt get a pic of them, plus there is a new wardrobe that I just put in, but its waiting to be painted so not worth taking a pic of yet.

thanx Fln, I should have some pics of another complete fitout soon, will be finished it on monday.

Very nice Faz!
Looks like my tv is there as well! (no really, I have that tv. I wasn't being silly and wishing I had it)
jonnyW
Faz you should take pictures of all your work. You must be proud pf your craftsmanship; what a change from the mass-production modern world.

When you said you built kitchens, I didn't realise you meant work of such beauty.

Congratulations.
fazman
thanx guys.

Id like to take piccys of em all, but most people take forever to do the final finishes of their reno's, so I dont get to go back and get a finished photo.
countrydude
great job faz
looks like a true craftsman at work hey. its not hard when you look at a finished job to pick the one that was done by the guy that actually takes pride in his work and enjoys what he does.
if i ever move to brissy ill know who to call smile.gif
jonnyW
I expect you would do mine, if I threw in a return ticket? Pity I'm not rich enough! lol
fazman
lol jonny, everyone asks me if I can do theirs for them. My mums still waiting after 18 years.

Your right CD, its usually easy to tell which tradeys take pride in their work
fazman
Thought Id add a couple more from part of another fitout Ive done.

These two are differant views of an entertainment unit. The rest of the unit is still not quite finished to get photos off of, missing some glass splash backs and mirrors.

Here you go
jonnyW
Thanks, Faz. We shall not tire of looking at your craftsmanship, so keep the pics coming!

I know you work very hard, but you must get a lot of job satisfaction. Seems your OTHER customers also get a splendid sevice, too.

I (almost) hang my head in shame at my amateur efforts...

Lol Jonny, dont hang ur head in shame, remember I am a professional cabinet maker by trade, this is something Ive been doing since 1990.

I do get alot of job satisfaction from the ones I am keen on doing. Sometimes some of the jobs are just the normal run of the mill kitchens, those are great for fast turnover but the full house fitouts are the ones that give the most satisfaction.

I am just about to start on another house in the city that is so far running the bill up at $115k for my side of the work. This one will be impressive once its all done, but its also scary thinking about it all too sad.gif

I do have quite alot of happy customers. The one for that entertainment unit has already said they will be doing another house in a couple of years and want me to do that one too.

I've never been able to figure out why anyone would buy those LCD screens with the glossy finish like the Pioneer one pictured in your post Faz - they reflect every light source around them right into the viewer's eyes. The matt finish ones (including Samsung models like Lordoth's) are great, you don't need to worry about ambient light competing with the picture you're supposed to see.
I remember when a big selling point for TVs was the type anti-glare coating that was used - now it's becoming hard to find a screen that doesn't have a mirror finish.

With enough promotion the average consumers come flocking to just about anything, I suppose.
countrydude
no wonder your so flat out faz with work of that quality. and as i said before the pride in your work shows through.
word of mouth alone would keep you going with work for ages im quite sure.
sounds like a big job coming up for you... the one in the city

with regards to the tvs FLN thats a confusing road i havent ventured down yet. these new flat screens. plasmas lcds etc. they both look the same to me. although no doubt there are huge differences.
ill worry about it when the one i got packs it in lol
jonnyW
One of my father's brothers was a good cabinetmaker. I have a couple of pieces he made. He would have appreciated what you are doing, because when he retired - about 1960 - he found that no private customers wanted to pay for good work: he got mostly things like office reception desks, where the corporate customer would pay.

Glad to see that "Patrons" of the arts are still about in Australia!
fazman
Some are Jonny, we do get alot of people wanting the "cheap" kitchen and most times they call after theyve looked at a DIY kit expecting me to supply it finished for less than the DIY price.
jonnyW
You get cheapskates everywhere! How dare they, if they have seen your beautiful work?

Do you find it easy to get good hardwood? In UK a good timber merchant is rare - it's nearly all Scandinavian softwood which is available.

I did get some Iroko a couple of years ago, though. I still have two pieces of Honduras Mahogany, acquired when I was production manager for a factory making airscrews for light aircraft. The timber had to be hand-selected at the docks, and these two each have one knot about 5mm in dia, so were rejects! They get shorter, as I use small pieces for odd projects...
fazman
we have plenty of timber suppliers. But some species are alot more expensive than they used to be.

Most stuff nowadays is prefab boards anyways
fazman
got a heap more photos up on http://www.cutlist.biz tonite.

Look for the ones from "Unit Fitout on Westend overlooking the Brisbane river" and "House fitout in a queenslander in toowong"

Way too many pics to post here, but guess if you guys want I could post the links to them.
countrydude
some top notch stuff there faz. very happy customers no doubt.
you should be proud to show off your work.
i went through the site and had a look at them all.
still wish i lived in brissy so you could do a job for me
jonnyW
Well, Jason Fazey a real treat for the eye!

You already know my opinion of your workmanship, in addition to your eye for clean and beautiful design. Your talent and your pride in what you do are obvious. I have looked at all these, and only wish you could do some for me!

With such "advertisement" there is no wonder you are commissioned to do work for some time to come. With these photos and word-of-mouth recommendations, somehow, I don't think even a serious recession, should one come, will reduce the demand for your work.

Summing up: "Top-class design and workmanship." excl.gif
lordoth
Makes me want to buy a house and fill it with fancy designs then sell it for millions of dollars! *Dr Evil face*
fazman
thanx guys

Just thought Id post some more pics of another house fitout that I have now completed.

There was also a laundry, powder room and main bathroom. I took alot more pics but didnt want to fill up the space with them on here

If you notice red dots, its from the handover.com guys where they make notes of things to fix. I had fixed them before the pics but not allowed to remove the stickers till they've gone over it again sad.gif
FLN
Those cabinets are beautiful Faz - you'd need a keen eye to find faults on something like that.
countrydude
another superb effort there faz.
jonnyW
Looks like another ecstatic customer when she gets her hands on that lot! Superb as usual - can't see many stickers! But, notice a camera and face "above" the ensuite! laugh.gif

The stickers are a good idea, which I have never seen in UK - probably you wouldn't see the units for stickers with some of our standard units and how they get fitted.

Will you put the other pics up on Cutlist? I hope so.

Am confined to bed with dizziness today, hope it will soon pass, as I have never suffered from it before. sad.gif
fazman
thanx guys. Yeh I will be adding the pics to cutlist as well. I am going to redo the way the gallery works and also have some other photos from that really big fitout I did earlier in the year.
fazman
finally did it. I just changed Cutlist over to a blog style website. All of the existing pages have been redone to work within a blog and now all the jobs that I have photos for have been broken down into what sort of work it was and had descriptions added for them all.

Im even going to try and add posts to the blog as to what Im currently working on.

Check it out if you like http://www.cutlist.biz

Faz, this is great. I have just spent ten minutes (only) for a quick look around. As I expected, the site all works exactly as it should. Will be going back for a longer look at the contents sometime in the next three days. When I have admired it all, I will let you know...

I am very busy at the moment, with a project to extend our charity work to a town about fifteen miles away, where we are due to start in two weeks - and I aim to be on time, as usual for something which I project manage, even in my old age.
fazman
Hi jonny, glad you enjoyed the new look.

Good luck with the charity work smile.gif
fazman
Thought I'd post a couple of pics from a job Im just about finished. These pics were taken with my new canon g9 and resized for the web.

Its a work in progress. All of the timber is actually rotary cut hoop pine plywood with exposed plywood edges polished in two pac. Everything you see in the kitchen hanging from the ceilings I have done myself.

The long open shelf with the cutouts hanging from the blades out of the ceiling, took me 8 hours to install it. It had to be built in 19 pieces and put together on site. All told just that one unit took around 4 days to make, polish and install.
jonnyW
What a piece of work! Congratulations, Faz. They say the labourer is worthy of his hire; I damn well hope you charged enough for such a tricky job which has turned out to look so good.

The client ought to be well pleased.

lol oh yeh, they were charged for it.

These are other people's houses right? You don't have 1 main house and 4 condos do you?

I wasn't too fond of the first fitout, a bit too Ikea like for me. I like all your later stuff though especially the white kitchen, very polished. If I ever get a house I'll know who to call wink.gif
fazman
lol adzy, yes they are other peoples houses.

Most of the complete fit outs are architecturally designed so I don't really get a say on the look or design. All I get is to suggest the best ways to make it work.

But its always fun to make them work, especially when at first the things they want to do they have no idea on how to achieve it.
adzy
Ah so you're just the guy that installs them. And here I was thinking you were some Hollywood bigshot tongue.gif
fazman
lol i do everything from start to finish. All the thinking behind the scenes, making and installing.
countrydude
another superb effort faz.
interesting design
looks quite functional
fazman
thanx CD, im heading back there tomorrow to do the handles and some finishing off. Hopefully ill be able to get pics of it all
fazman
Just finished adding the photos of all the work. Everything is on http://www.cutlist.biz/new/

Good work again fazman

I like the idea of open shelves but the only problem is it looks like everything's going to fall off at some point tongue.gif They look a lot better without anything on it. The kitchen bench top seems more suited for restuarants then homes, there's a few things I would change if I owned the house. Speaking of renovations my friend's parents had their kitchen done (most of it was done by his dad aside from the fitting of the cabinets & benchtops)

The place where it isn't tiled on the floor used to be the laundry & bathroom but they've knocked the walls down and extended it. The tiled area was their original kitchen size (up to the end of the benchtop) & the vacuum cleaner will be replaced by a fridge. Its easily about 4 times bigger than their previous kitchen which'll make it easier since there's 4 people living there (at one point 5)

They've done renovations all over the house thus far making the house at least twice as long with an extra ensuite & new furniture. Its basically like a hotel now, I'm so jealous sad.gif
fazman
Cool, always nice to get a new kitchen into a house. There is only two things I don't like about the layout. The surround around the underbench oven. I don't understand why people still do that as it's not needed for venting and its a waste of cupboard space. And the second is the pantry doors, where they have split them, to me shouldve been at the same height as the underbench doors. That way it all lines up properly.
countrydude
just finished having a squizz.
you and the clients both must be pleased with how it turned out

Yeah, it might look better with the fridge in there but the pantry on the right looks more like a wardrobe as it doesn't fit in properly with the rest. I'm not sure if it is a pantry, these were emailed to me so I have to wait until my next visit
jonnyW
Yes, Faz, you must be pleased with the finished kitchen. I trust the client is just as please - I bet the woman of the house certainly is!

No wonder you are so busy, you must have the clients queuing up when they have seen what you have done for other people. Real craftsman you certainly are... My congratulations once more.

Regards,

jonnyW
fazman
Im very happy with the finished product. The builder, architect and the clients are all stoked with the way it came out. The builder said it really compliments the house.

As to people lining up, im not that popular, but would be nice wink.gif

Just thought Id post another kitchen I was finally able to get pics of today that I completed back in January

Another of your perfectionist jobs. I like it.

I sometimes can't get my head round the time zones: I'm typing this before you posted it (oh, yeah?) lol
